In Peru, unusual circles have been found near an ancient city

Geologists have discovered many new geoglyphs - giant drawings on the ground near the ancient Indian city of Quilcapampa in Peru. The article about the study was accepted for publication in the Journal of Archaeological Science, reports LiveScience.

When studying the vicinity of the ancient city in Peru, the researchers combined the results of satellite images, aerial photography from drones and the results of ground observations. As a result of this work, the scientists mapped many new, previously unknown circular geoglyphs. Some of them were just circles. However, there were also more complex shapes. One geoglyph consisted of 6 concentric circles. In addition, inside or near some of the images the researchers found piled piles of stones.

The size of the discovered drawings varied greatly. Simple single rings had a diameter of 2 to 4 meters. And the size of the largest compound ring reached the area of two basketball courts.
Researchers believe that all the discovered figures were created in the period from 1050 to 1400 AD by the inhabitants of the city of Kvilkapampa. At that time it was a large trading city, the size of which reached 70 hectares. In fact, the city was a staging post on the trade routes between the coast and the highlands.

The most famous geoglyphs are the famous images on the Nazca Plateau.
There are several ways to create geoglyphs: by removing the top layer of soil around the perimeter of the pattern, by pouring rubble where the line of the pattern should pass, by planting trees that form the necessary pattern.
