Pluto has been proposed to be returned to planetary status

A team of scientists has declared that Pluto should once again be designated a planet. Along with dozens of similar bodies in the solar system.

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union officially stopped considering Pluto a classical planet and classified it as a dwarf planet. Pluto met only two of the three criteria for a "real" planet: it is round and orbits the Sun, but shares its orbit with other objects. Now scientists oppose the old decision.

They said the International Astronomical Union's definition of a planet is unscientific. It harms research. Scientists say Pluto should be classified as a planet according to the definition used since the 16th century: "planets" are any geologically active bodies in space. Many other objects fall under such a definition, such as Ceres, as well as the satellites Europa, Enceladus and Titan. Researchers believe that there could be more than 150 planets in the solar system in this way.
