The largest comet in history discovered

The Bernardinelli-Bernstein comet, previously discovered, has been officially recognized as the largest ever observed.

This object, also known as Comet 2014 UN271, is 137 kilometers across. Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein is named after its discoverers, astronomers Pedro H. Bernardinelli and Gary M. Bernstein, who first spotted the object in the Dark Energy Survey data set. The images of the comet date back to 2014, so this year is listed in the comet's official scientific designation.

This celestial body comes from the Oort Cloud. Currently, the comet is flying deep into the solar system. It will approach Earth in 2031 and will remain, fortunately for us, outside the orbit of Saturn.
