Scientists observed a planet similar to Tatooine through a ground-based telescope

Ученые наблюдали в наземный телескоп планету, похожую на Татуин

Using a ground-based telescope, a team of astronomers has described a rare exoplanet orbiting two stars simultaneously. The discovery shows that observations with ground-based telescopes are still a relevant method of space exploration and could help in the search for other double-star planets.

Scientists first discovered the exoplanet Kepler-16b about 10 years ago using NASA's Kepler space telescope. It is located about 245 light years from Earth and is a planet with a multiple orbit, meaning it orbits two stars simultaneously. And the stars themselves also revolve around each other, forming a binary system. Kepler-16b resembles the planet Tatooine from the Star Wars universe, on the surface of which two sunsets could be seen at once.

Now, an international team of scientists led by researchers from the University of Birmingham (UK) has observed Kepler-16b for the first time through a ground-based telescope. Their results are published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The researchers used a 193-cm telescope at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence in France and the Doppler method. The technique, also known as the "radial velocity method", involves spectrometric measurements of the radial velocity of a star. A star with a planetary system orbits around the centre of mass of the whole system. This will cause the speed at which it travels towards the Earth to change, leading to a shift in the spectral lines caused by the Doppler effect.

The discovery of Kepler-16b shows that near-Earth exoplanets can also be observed with ground-based telescopes, which is often cheaper and more efficient than using spacecraft. In addition, the Doppler method allows all the planets in the system to be described and their masses measured.

Scientists now plan to continue searching for previously unknown planets with multiple orbits and finally understand where they came from. Normally, planets form inside a protoplanetary disk, a cloud of dust and gas around a young star. However, the presence of two stars probably prevents the dust from sticking together into planets inside the protoplanetary disk.

Scientists speculate that planets with multiple orbits may have formed away from the twin stars, where their influence was weak, and then moved closer to them. According to another version, the current understanding of planetary accretion processes requires additions. Therefore, further studies of planets with multiple orbits will help to answer this question.
