Aliens can use cell phone signals to map Earth

Инопланетяне могут использовать сигналы мобильной связи, чтобы картографировать Землю

Some of the signals emitted by base stations reach neighboring stars. As the planet rotates, their power changes, allowing you to estimate the distribution of cellular networks and figure out the population density in different regions of the planet.

Mobile communications uses a network of base stations. Today it covers a large part of the land surface, especially in densely populated regions. These antennas continuously send signals in the shortwave range. Part of their radiation ends up in space, and with sufficiently sensitive radio telescopes, it can be registered from neighboring stars. This is the possibility considered by the authors of a new article published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Ramiro Saide (Ramiro Saide) and his colleagues pointed out that each base station emits a signal of 100-200 watts and the total energy they emit into space, second only to military radars. However, the radiation pattern of mobile communication antennas diverges mainly horizontally to the sides, not upwards. Therefore, for an observer in space, such a source will be better seen at times when it is near the edge of the rotating planet's disk.

Scientists have demonstrated that with large interferometer radio telescopes, such as the future Event Horizon Telescope, mobile network signals can be discerned from nearby stars, including Alpha Centauri (about four light-years from the Sun), the Barnard Star (six light-years) and HD 95735 (eight). The first of these is closer than the others, but remains on the southern hemisphere side of the Earth, where there are significantly fewer base stations. But from the other two stars you can see the mobile signals of the Northern Hemisphere of our planet.

It is difficult to imagine that a signal received at such a distance, weak and noisy, would allow someone to overhear the conversations of Earthlings. However, its profile should change as the planet rotates, as base stations of different countries and regions appear on the horizon. Theoretically, this is enough to estimate the distribution of mobile networks in the corresponding hemisphere. From this data, it is possible to determine the position of seas and land, population density - and even to trace how it changes over the years.
