China has launched the world's fastest internet up to 1.2 terabits per second

A fiber-optic line that provides data transfer speeds of up to 1.2 terabits per second has begun operating in China. This is more than 10 times faster than most conventional Internet backbone networks, which operate at speeds on the order of 100 gigabits per second. A speed of 1.2 terabits per second would allow 150 high-resolution movies to be downloaded in just one second, according to Huawei vice president Wang Lei at a press conference to launch the backbone.

The project was realized by China's Tsinghua University, operator China Mobile, and Huawei Technologies and Cernet Corporation. The launch took place 2 years earlier than predicted in this industry: it was believed that networks with a speed of 1 terabit per second would appear no earlier than 2025. The fiber optic fiber with a length of more than 3000 km connects Beijing, Wuhan and Guangzhou.

The launch of the 1.2-terabit line took place as part of China's national Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI, Future Internet Technology Infrastructure) project, managed by China's Ministry of Education, it has been implemented since 2013 and supported by the country's government. All software and hardware of the system was created by Chinese specialists, and FITI is planned to be completed by the end of this year.
